Co-Pack & Fulfilment Company of the Year

This category recognises companies providing contract manufacturing, packing, fulfilment & logistics services in the UK who have delivered the best overall performance in the year under review. Judges will be looking for evidence of strong financial performance, forward-thinking business strategy including meeting the demand for full end-to-end service, production excellence and top-quality customer support. They are also required to submit details of financial performance. Please note that these figures are used for judging purposes only and are treated as being strictly confidential; they are not for publication.

CSR Initiative of the Year

The CSR initiative awards environmental initiative abound in packaging, from small-scale projects such as encouraging recycling at work or local education initiatives to major schemes such as remodelling of logistics to reduce lorry journeys. For investment, entrants must also highlight what equipment was installed and by what manufacturer.

Please note: this category is intended to recognise company CSR projects and is not open to new packs. For new pack innovations with strong sustainability credentials, please see category R, Resource Efficient Pack.

Design Team of the Year

Like last year, we’re on the lookout for a design team that fully understands how designing for a circular economy will benefit the challenges facing the UK. Open to both design agencies and in-house design teams based in the UK, this category rewards consistently outstanding creative output combined with commitment to addressing the sustainability challenges facing the packaging sector. Judges will consider the design output from a circular economy standpoint, how the team addressed sustainability in their design strategy in terms of a cradle to cradle thinking, clarity of brand communication and, most importantly, how the consumer was engaged in the process of returning the packaging to the recycling and reuse process.

Development Team of the Year

This category is open exclusively to packaging development teams at brands and retailers and is designed to reward the team that has shown consistent innovation and quality in the packaging that they specify. Judges will be looking for innovative and original structural and graphic design plus intelligent choices around materials. Entrants will be required to submit five packs that launched in the year under review and that best illustrate their work.

Investment Project of the Year

This award will honour the investment or installation project which has had the greatest impact on a company or the wider market. entrants must highlight how the project changed their business / market in which it operates and evidence of ROI. For investment, entrants must also include what equipment was installed, including names of manufacturers.

Outstanding Contribution to the Industry

This award recognises individual achievement in the packaging industry and rewards people who have made an impact, not only within their own companies but in the wider industry over their career. Unlike the other awards, the winner is chosen by the Packaging News editorial team, who will take into consideration achievements across a career or outstanding achievements.

Packaging Company

The ultimate accolade in the packaging industry recognises the packaging manufacturer that has best combined outstanding financial, business and production performance over the year under review. Entry for this year’s category is different for 2019: the Packaging News team – along with our judges – will identify the high performers and invite them to enter. If your company is selected then we will require a 500 word summary highlighting the company's performance and key developments during the year, along with the submission of supporting evidence such as letters of commendation from customers or sample work.

Rising Star Award

Packaging is a hotbed of emerging talent, be it in manufacturing, technology, design or any of the other areas that form the packaging supply chain. This award recognises individuals in the first five years of their professional lives who, whatever they do, are making a real difference to the company they work for. Businesses are invited to nominate people within their own company or in companies they deal with.

SME of the Year

Like the flagship Packaging Company category, this award recognises smaller packaging suppliers that have combined outstanding financial, business and production performance. To qualify, entrants must have had an annual turnover of less than £20m during the year under review and must provide the company’s full report and accounts.

Quality Awards

Best Packaging of a New Product

This category recognises packs of any material that have been an essential element in the success of a new product or brand manufactured in the UK. Entries should contain a summary from the brand owner explaining how the product’s packaging has affected its commercial success, a pack brief and an explanation of how the pack meets the brief.

Best New Concept Award

Packaging is full of ingenious inventions that have not yet made it to market. This award recognises the best new packaging innovation that has not yet been taken up by a brand or end user. Judges will be looking for the best innovative pack prototypes or new materials. Entrants must demonstrate how their invention is scalable in terms of production and what problem it aims to solve that current packs do not solve.

Branding Project of the Year

This category rewards outstanding brand design projects for either new or existing products. Judges will be looking for outstanding and original graphic design that encapsulates the brand’s values and communicates it clearly and effectively to consumers.

Cartonboard Pack of the Year

This category recognises innovation and excellence in production for all types of packs made primarily from cartonboard, but caps, windows and other components can be made from other materials. Along with a description of how the pack met the brief, please supply one full pack, one flat pack (if applicable) and one that is fully constructed but empty.

Consumer Convenience Award

This category rewards the best packs of any material that demonstrate outstanding convenience for the consumer, including factors such as ease of opening, resealing, ease of use, ease of storage and ease of disposal.

Corrugated: Online Retail and Consumer Goods

This category is open to all corrugated packs that deliver products directly to consumers, including packs for online retail, outer boxes for products such as drinks, packs for large consumer items and white goods and so on. This category must be made predominantly from corrugated material, but caps, windows and other components can be made from other materials. A sample of one full pack, one flat pack (if applicable) and one that is fully constructed but empty is also required. Finally, entrants should provide production information as well as pack manufacturer, design agency and client contact details.

 

Please note: Retail ready packaging, shelf ready packaging and point of sale packs should be entered into the Corrugated: Retail Ready and Point of Sale category. Industrial and other types of packaging made of corrugated board should be entered in the Supply Chain Solution of the Year category.

Corrugated: Retail Ready and Point of Sale

This category is open to all corrugated packs that perform a role in the retail space to deliver primary packs to shoppers, including retail ready packs and point of sale units. In all cases, judges will be looking for production quality as well as standout and ease-of-use for the store operative. Packs in this category must be made predominantly from corrugated material, but components such as windows can be made from other materials. Please supply one full pack, one flat pack (if applicable) and one that is fully constructed but empty.

Flexible Plastic Pack of the Year

This category will reward excellence in production and innovation in flexible plastic packs such as pouches, sachets, sacks and bags. This pack should primarily be made predominantly from flexible plastic materials, but caps, windows and other components can be made from other materials.

Glass Pack of the Year: Other drinks, food and other glass products

These categories are open to all frosted, clear or coloured glass packaging including jars, bottles and vials. Judges will be looking for both innovation and production excellence and will consider each pack based on how well the pack meets the brief and fits its target market. Entries should be made primarily from glass, but caps, windows and other components can be made from other materials.

Glass Pack of the Year: Spirits, perfume and cosmetics

These categories are open to all frosted, clear or coloured glass packaging including jars, bottles and vials. Judges will be looking for both innovation and production excellence and will consider each pack based on how well the pack meets the brief and fits its target market. Entries should be made primarily from glass, but caps, windows and other components can be made from other materials.

Innovation of the Year

This category rewards packs of any material that have brought something completely new and unexpected to the market and delivered real benefits to a brand. Details of the development process should also be highlighted as well as how the pack added value to the brand.

Label of the Year

This category recognises the best in printed labels and is open to all labels for packaging, including self-adhesive labels, shrink sleeves, wet-glue labels, leaflet labels and in-mould labels, printed using any method. The label submitted must be the final version displayed on the pack.

Limited Edition of the Year

The proliferation of limited edition packs in recent times has demonstrated a growing recognition of the power of special edition packaging in influencing consumers’ purchasing decisions. This award recognises the very best limited edition packs, in any material or market, taking into account factors such as the success of the promotion, the graphical and structural creativity of the pack and how the limited edition reflects the brand itself.

Metal Pack of the Year

This category rewards excellence in innovation and production for packs made of aluminium, steel or any other metal. Closures and lids made of metal, are eligible for entries even if the body of the pack is not made of metal. This category is only open to packs produced by members of the Metal Packaging Manufacturers’ Association. All products submitted must have been manufactured in an MPE (Metal Packaging Europe) member country which covers Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the UK and must be made predominantly from metal material.

Resource Efficient Pack of the Year

This category will reward the pack that shows the best social and environmental credentials. Judges will take into account factors including:

•         Was the packaging designed as part of the product development process?

•         Did the design of the sales packaging take account of how the grouping and transport packaging would fit with it?

•         Does the whole system (sales, grouping and transport packaging) use the minimum adequate amount of materials to provide the necessary protection and preservation of the product?

•         After use is the packaging capable of being recovered either as energy or a material or composted?

Rigid Plastic Pack of the Year

This category recognises the best innovation and production in rigid plastic packs and is open to blow moulded, thermoformed and injection moulded packs made from materials including PP, PET, LDPE, HDPE and bioplastics.

Refillable Pack of the Year

New for 2019, this award will recognise the latest innovations in refillable packaging – an area that has come under increased scrutiny as a result of the single-use debate. Entrants must demonstrate: ease of use for busy on-the-go consumers, that the pack is sturdy and protects the product; and that consumers can easily wash the pack for future use. Judges will also take into account graphics and the structure of the pack. Also, entrants must show how the pack can fit into the circular economy.

Supply Chain Solution of the Year

This category recognises packaging of any material that has helped products travel safely, conveniently and cost-effectively through the supply chain. Entries can include one-way or returnable outer case transit packs, crates and pallets and industrial packaging in any material.
